About Me:

Thea (Xianying) Chen is a Masters student and mentee in the BIG IDEAs Lab at Duke University. Thea is currently studying health metrics derived from smartwatches worn by real-world patients with infectious diseases, with the broader goal of using statistical approaches and wearable data to better understand patterns in health and disease.

She enjoys using her Apple Watch to track activity and sleep and fuels her research days with bubble tea and an R&B playlist. Outside the lab, Thea is an avid birdwatcher and wildlife photographer. Fun fact: she has spotted and identified an impressive 475 different bird species. On weekends, she enjoys birdwatching, wildlife photography, and fishing, celebrates wins with a new piercing, and finds comfort in hotpot.
