About Me:

Shekh Md Mahmudul Islam, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Associate in the BIG IDEAs Lab at Duke University, where his work sits at the intersection of digital health, biomedical Doppler radar, wireless sensing, and machine learning. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and both his M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. His research focuses on digital health technologies, RF sensing, digital biomarker extraction, and applying machine learning to transform raw physiological signals into meaningful health insights.

Currently, Dr. Islam is working on non-invasive monitoring strategies for Type 2 Diabetes using commercial wearable devices, advancing scalable approaches to continuous, real-world health assessment. Inspired by pioneering researcher John A. Rogers, he approaches innovation with both technical depth and optimism, often best captured with a simple :). A recent Apple Watch adopter, he fuels his work with coffee and can most likely be found at the campus center grabbing another cup. When diving into data analysis, Bengali songs provide the perfect background, while weekends often include hiking and time outdoors.

Outside the lab, he enjoys singing Tagore songs to unwind - though he keeps his audience small and exclusive to his daughter. He celebrates wins by taking time to relax and recharge, finds comfort in a plate of biryani, and continues to push forward in developing sensing technologies that make health monitoring more accessible, precise, and impactful.
