About Me:

Kara Bivens is an undergraduate student and mentee in the BIG IDEAs Lab at Duke University. She is pursuing a B.S. in Statistical Science and an AB2 in Political Science at Duke and focuses on prediabetes detection using non-invasive wearables and radar technologies. Kara is currently contributing to GLIMMER, DST SPARK, and a Sleep Health Review Paper, with the broader goal of advancing accessible, non-invasive methods for early diabetes detection.

Outside the lab, she can be found studying at Perkins Library, walking through the Duke Gardens, or attending class. Fun fact: she’s a dedicated morning person and is awake by 6:00 a.m. every day. Fueled by Earl Grey tea and inspired by pioneering chemist Alice Ball, Kara brings curiosity and discipline to her research. On weekends, she enjoys attending Duke basketball games and exploring Triangle restaurants.
