About Me:

Jiamu (Jerry) Yang is a third-year PhD candidate in the BIG IDEAs Lab at Duke University, where he focuses on using wearable data to track infectious diseases and improve early detection. He earned his B.S. from Case Western Reserve University in 2022 and his M.S. from Duke University in 2023. His research centers on modeling physiological and pathological responses using wearable device data, translating continuous, real-world signals into early indicators of disease and health change.

Jerry is currently contributing to projects including InfectionWatch and applications of wearables in Parkinson’s Disease, developing models that advance proactive and personalized health monitoring. He considers the development of the DREAMT dataset one of his proudest achievements, reflecting his commitment to building high-quality, accessible resources for the research community. Inspired by Will Wang, PhD, he approaches his work with steady focus and growth-oriented determination.

A fan of the Oura Ring (Gen 4) for its accuracy, long battery life, and ease of use, Jerry often plays “Ég er kominn heim” in the background during deep work sessions. Outside the lab, he can most likely be found on a soccer field, either playing soccer or serving as assistant coach for Duke’s Chinese student soccer team. Jerry lives by the advice: “Go for it.” One day, he hopes to carry out a bucket-list experiment in curiosity - hiring two detectives and asking them to follow each other for a day.
