About Me:

Annika Kumar is a Masters student and mentee in the BIG IDEAs Lab at Duke University. She earned her B.S. from the University of Washington and is currently pursuing her M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Duke. Annika focuses on diabetes research using the AI-READI dataset and examines bias in demographic reporting among studies that apply artificial intelligence to wearable device data. She is currently working on AI-READI and an AI biosignals review, with the broader goal of improving fairness, transparency, and accuracy in wearable-based health research.

Outside the lab, she enjoys spending time at home with her dog and binging shows on Netflix. Fun fact: she was born in Kansas and enjoys playing basketball in her free time. Fueled by a white chocolate mocha from Starbucks and inspired by her undergraduate internship mentors who first introduced her to the field, Annika approaches her work with steady curiosity - an energy she might describe with a continuous glucose monitor tracing, reflecting her focus on diabetes research. Guided by the advice, “Don’t try to reinvent something if it already exists,” she celebrates wins with chocolate, finds comfort in pizza, and hopes to visit many more places in the future.
