Dr. Jessilyn Dunn Presents at NIAID CIVICs Annual Meeting!

August 15, 2025

What if your smartwatch could tell you you’re sick before you feel it? 🩺⌚

That’s the kind of future we’re working toward.

This week at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Collaborative Influenza Vaccine Innovation Centers (CIVICs) (NIAID CIVICs Network) meeting in downtown Durham, Dr. Jessilyn Dunn shared findings from the Duke BME BIG IDEAs Lab on using wearable technology to develop digital biomarkers for early infection detection. The findings from our lab were generated from projects led by Dr. Christopher Woods and Dr. Emmanuel Walter.

Kaileigh Moertl and Jiamu Yang joined in, connecting with researchers from across the program and getting inspired by the groundbreaking science driving the fight against influenza.

This work is more than research—it’s a step toward transforming how we monitor health, respond to illness, and protect communities.

💭 If your wearables could flag illness early, how would that change your life?
