BIG IDEAs Lab enjoyed a beach retreat together!

Our 2026 lab retreat at Topsail Beach a few weeks ago was such a fun reminder that some of our best moments together happen outside the lab!

We traded our computers for beach chairs and spent time cooking meals together, playing ping-pong, throwing frisbees on the beach, relaxing by the ocean, and simply enjoying time together outside our usual research routines.

One of the highlights was our “lightning talk” challenge, where lab members had to present someone else’s research using intentionally confusing (and hilarious) PowerPoint slides. Equal parts chaos, creativity, and scientific improv, and definitely one of the funniest lab activities we’ve done.

We’re grateful to be part of a lab that values collaboration, mentorship, and community just as much as scientific discovery. Retreats like this remind us how important it is to build strong connections both inside and outside the lab.

Already looking forward to next year’s retreat!
